California College of Ayurveda is an American private college specializing in the field of Ayurvedic medicine. It is located at 700 Zion Street, in Nevada City, California. Founded in 1995 by Marc Halpern, the California College of Ayurveda was the first state-approved ayurvedic college in the United States to train practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine. .

History of the California College of Ayurveda

The College was founded in 1995 by Dr. Marc Halpern with the support of Dr. Subhash Ranade from Pune', India and Dr. David Frawley, a Western Vedic scholar. In 1996, the College became the first State licensed school of Ayurveda having received approval from the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. In 1999 the College was the first Western institution to sign a memorandum of understanding with an Indian College of Ayurveda, affiliating itself with Gujarat Ayurved University in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The college's advisory board includes Dr. David Frawley, Dr. Liladhar Gupta, Dr. Akhilesh Sharma, Swami Sitaramananda, Didi Ananda Lalita and Yogini Shambhavi.

The College's first community clinic opened in Grass Valley, California in 1997. In 2010, the college and clinic moved into a larger campus located in Nevada City, California. In 2012, the College received a donation from Organic India to begin to the first student tended, teaching herbal Medicine Garden at an Ayurvedic School in the United States.

In 2010, The California College of Ayurveda expanded its activities into Latin America through the development of a sister college; Escuela de Ayurveda de California.

About the Founder

The founder of the College, Marc Halpern, trained as a Chiropractor at Palmer College of Ayurveda in Sunnyvale, California. He received his post-graduate certification in holistic medicine through New York Chiropractic College and began his studies in Ayurvedic medicine with David Frawley in 1991. Halpern is founding member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association where he served as the chairman of the education committee until 2005 and the California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine. Halpern received the All-India award of Best Ayurvedic Physician. He also was awarded the 2012 Dhanvantari award for Excellence in Ayurvedic Practice by the Association of Ayurvedic Professionals of North America. Halpern sits on several advisory boards including the Journal for Research and Education in Indian Medicine (India) and Light on Ayurveda Journal (USA)

Research

The California College of Ayuveda has collaborated with the UC Davis Department of Dermatology to publish several studies, one study, "Gotu Kola exposure protects adult skin fibroblasts from oxidative stress," received the highest honors from the National Ayurvedic Medical Association for "Inspirational Scientific Research in Ayurveda".

The California College of Ayurveda Mind-Body Health center serves as the college's clinic offering Panchakarma detoxification, purification, and rejuvenation and various spa therapies such as abhyangha (ayuvedic massage), svedana (steam therapy), shirodhara, facials and various basti therapies.
